FRIENDS Apartments Floorplan (Old version) by nikneuk FRIENDS Apartments Floorplan (Old version) by nikneuk
.
This handmade floorplan represents the apartments of Monica-Rachel and Chandler-Joey from the TV show "Friends".
Is an original hand drawed plan, in scale, coloured with colour pens and with full details of furniture and complements ...
The design is made according with the "real" apartments respecting the spaces, proportions, furniture and objets presents in the studio.
Some sets have changed throughout the different seasons and this floorplan is a mixture of various of them.

This is pretty impressive. I can't believe the amount of detail you put into this! I picture the apartments and they fit this floor plan perfectly. Did you have to watch the show while you were mapping this?

I'm glad you like the drawing.
But in fact I'm a bit ashamed of some of these old drawings.
I made this drawing 5 years ago (or more) in a very small size.
As you can see in the link below the last versions (original hadmade artworks avalaible though my Etsy store) are more detailed.
i57.tinypic.com/oub3ih.jpg
And yes, I downloaded the full series to map the floorplan.
This is the method I use to make these floorplan.

I purchased this drawing on Etsy. I couldn't leave a review there because I didn't get the piece before the time window to comment closed, so I came here to say what a PHENOMENAL job this man does on his drawings. The attention to detail is fantastic. If you think this piece looks good here, you should see it in person. Check out his Etsy shop if you want to own an original. I'm so happy, I had to find a place to give this man props! :D

I saw that episode and I know perfectly well what was in that room.
It was very ugly to draw something messy like a dump, the effect not was good.
I opted to put a "?" that represented the mystery, the interrogation of that episode.
Perhaps it would have been better if I had written another word (or any) but that was my choice.

Normally I downloaded the entire series or the movie.
I prefer it the closed series to have available all about them.
In the sitcoms the principal set (normally the living room placed in front of the audience) appears in all the episodes.
The problem is usually locate the secondary sets as the bedrooms and bathrooms.
Normally moveable sets that changes continously and contradictory with the central sets cause are built in other place of the studio.
That is the problem with the multicamera series.
In fact they are like a theatrical sets...
In series as "Sex & the City", filmed as movies (not recorded in front of an audience) the sets are closed and more logical and coherent.
Just as real apartments...

In a couple of hours I can locate all that I need using the forward button of the player.
I revised the episodes several times and pointed the ones in which appears everything that I need.
Meanwhile I'm creating a first basic layout that I refined and developed with notes of aid.
When I made a composition of place I started a second layout (using the anotations of the first rude layout) to fit the final dimensions, proportions, to place furniture and to complete the final shape of the drawing.
Finally I started the third and definitive floorplan that I made more carefully.
To complete the final drawing I revised all my anotations to find timber tones, the colors of the materials, the fabrics and all the details that I need to make an accurated floorplan.
In total I need from 30 to 40 hours (or more, In fact I've never counted) to complete one floorplan from zero to the final uploaded result.

I think that I spend so much time locating everything that I need.
Time that is multiplied when it's a log runnig series with many seasons.
Time that doubles when the sets of the series change throughout the seasons and/or when they are full of contradictios.
That is usually the norm ...

It's more easy to fix the proportions, dimensions, furniture, etc when the drawing is from a movie or a miniseries.
Principally cause the length of the series or movie are minor.
The problem with a miniseries or a movie is that they are few miniseries or movies that it shows all the houses or apartments.
Normally we can see only a portion of the houses (the living room, kitchen and bedroom only) and thy are few movies that shows completily a house or an apartment.
The apartment of Holly Golightly from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" was a good example of a full set.

When I made handmade floorplans (that I made by order and sell in my ETSY store) I need only from 10 to 15 hours to replicate one of the originals depending of the complexity and size of the purchased drawing.

I use with cardboards (with high gramage), ink, markers and colour pencils to make the drawings.
It's a technic that I know how to use and offers my... comfort.
For my work used watercolors when I made large representations and currently I use 3D software design that allows me to easily change the elements of a real project.
But for these floorplans I was looking for something more artistic and less technical, to transmit the personality of the houses with the warmth and unperfection of a handmade drawing.

Wow, that is a very thorough description! I think your process is very interesting. It takes a long time, but the product is great, because your floorplans are very accurate! Thank you for taking the time to ask my question. :) By the way, do you watch Adventure Time? It might be interesting for you to draw the floorplan of either Finn and Jake's treehouse or Marceline's cave house. Just a suggestion! :) Thank you so much! I'm excited to see all your future works.

The Bathroom in Monica's and Rachels Apartment is a bit off, the Bathtub is on the left side of the room, opposed to the door:

apart from that great! my new Wallpaper :)

As you can read in some posts the secondary sets have changed many times trough the seasons.
The most usual distribution for the bathroom of the girls is the distribution that I've represented.
You can see this distribution in episodes like this:
[link]
And in other episodes as the one in with Phoebe and Rachel discovers the pregnancy test or the other one in wich Joey changes the tiles of the floor (but I remembre that in this episode the toilet is placed behind the window).
Usually the window is right in front of the door, the toilet and the sink to the right side and the bathttub to the left as you can see in these episodes and in my floorplan.

hello! i love your floor plan but it seems to me that in monica and rach's appartment, there's a problem with the way you have drawn their bedrooms (sorry for my english, i'm french lol) it's seems to me that the terrace is in front of the front door when you enter the appartment and that the bedrooms are on the right side of the living room. but i may be mistaken.

Non, vous êtes un peu erroné...
.

The Friends one is GREAT!

Though the southern walls are never actually there since that's where the studio audience is and it would block their view onto the set. Uh, I mean.. it's completely accurate and the walls are there.. there is no audience.

Thank you very much for your comment.
But the "fourth wall" has appeared a couple of times...
And in both apartments.
.
In the episode in wich Chandler discovers the secret junk of Monica in the closet of the corridor there are some screenshots from inside the closet and the southern wall appears.
And in many takes from the balcony is possible to see this walls.
In the apartment of the boys the southern wall of the living room are appeared when Chandler are bathing the duck and the camera is positioned in the wall of the bathroom.
I don't remember more but there exists some more views of the "fourth wall"...
.
Yes, I see a looooooot of episodes and make many screen captures to take visual references and draw this floorplan...

Yes you are right of course. I know they are occasionally seen, but they're practically never there.

I'd love to see a floor plan of Central Perk too. Phoebe's and Ross's are not that frequently shown and probably wouldn't be easy to draw complete plans of.

I must have seen the full series a dozen times on DVD, gotta watch it again soon.

I just love this!!! I am a TV geek and a floorplan geek! You are spot on here. I do recall that the "?" closet at the back of the hall was a deep dark secret for most of the show's episodes. In one of the later episodes this door is finally opened, revealing that Monica was a secret closet slob!! Hillarious. Thank you for doing this and sharing.
