Apartment of Monica and Rachel from FRIENDS by nikneuk Apartment of Monica and Rachel from FRIENDS by nikneuk
Individual version of the floorplan from "FRIENDS" featuring only the apartment of Monica Geller and Rachel Green.
This handmade floorplan represents the apartments of Monica-Rachel and Chandler-Joey from the TV show "Friends".
Is an original hand drawed plan, in scale, coloured with colour pens and with full details of furniture and complements ...
The design is made according with the "real" apartments respecting the spaces, proportions, furniture and objets presents in the studio.
Some sets have changed throughout the different seasons and this floorplan is a mixture of various of them.

Never ceases to amaze me how huge this apartment really is. Directors explain it away as being much easier to shoot in a larger space... but, the chairs & desk BESIDE the "Living Room" area? And the hallway going to the bathroom & mystery closet? And both rooms are extremely large given that they're in New York, and they barely ever shot scenes in there! So even WITH giving them a large set to shoot in, you'd think they'd only have needed 2/3 the space. I mean, how often did they ever sit next to that window? Nearly every scene was shot at the kitchen table or in the living room facing the TV.

But the apartments of the sitcoms are, basically "theatrical" sets, opened in the front side to allow an audience (and cameras, technicians, etc) to see and record the show.
And is important to create a sense of space giving depth usually with hallways, windows or terraces with a landscape at the bottom.
Also the designers use tricks to... distort space opening the angles of the walls so all the sets (aparently with standard walls at 90º) are in fact trapeziodals, wider at the frontside and narrower at the bottom part.…
And about the hallway: To create this sense of depth (and avoid the feeling of claustrophobia and boring backgrounds) they use the angles of the soundstages to built these sets. In the case of "Friends" that door at the bottom of the hallway (Monica's junk closet in one episode) was in fact a practical door to the backside of the soundstage used by the actors and the technicians.

Yeah, it's fascinating stuff. In the episode with the "Mystery Closet" you even see the OTHER SIDE of the apartment! The wall that's usually "invisible" so the audience can see in. The note about the "Depth" of the hallway is interesting- that's probably why there's a small hallway in Leonard & Sheldon's apartment in The Big Bang Theory, and why Frasier's apartment contains a bathroom beside the front door (who's EVER seen that?), and TWO hallways on each side of the camera's view!

For some special customers (who have purchased handmade originals) also I have included other iconic elements.
As the chicken/duck, the pie in the floor of the hallway, the canoe, the delator red sueter of Ross, etc...

Hi! Great work. The questionmark it's a really messy closet that Monica doesn't want Chandler to discover.
